HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 501
Commending Nola Carolyn Hughes Lindsey.

WHEREAS, Nola Carolyn Hughes Lindsey, a respected member of the Hampton Roads community, celebrated her 85th birthday in 2016; and

WHEREAS, Nola Lindsey was born on February 23, 1931, and as the oldest of six children, she learned early the value of a good education; she was the first of her immediate family to graduate from high school and afterward encouraged her siblings to do the same; and

WHEREAS, as a young mother Nola Lindsey’s thirst for education moved her to attend night school to acquire skills to help support her family financially; she also instilled the value of a good education in her children; and

WHEREAS, Nola Lindsey supported her husband, James, in establishing a family-owned plumbing and heating business, Lindsey Brothers, Inc., a company that has served residential and commercial customers throughout the Hampton Roads area since 1966; and

WHEREAS, Nola Lindsey, along with her husband, provided a loving and nurturing environment for their family of 10 children, several of whom went on to college and graduate school and all of whom have worked or are working with the family business; and

WHEREAS, Nola Lindsey has been a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, and she has been blessed to enjoy and inspire five generations of family members; and

WHEREAS, Nola Lindsey has demonstrated compassion for the elderly and has opened her home to provide meals for widows and homecare for elderly family members in need; and

WHEREAS, a champion of the underdog, Nola Lindsey has spent her life as a defender of the disenfranchised, disadvantaged, those without voice, and persons needing a second chance; as a living testament to the life that she has lived, many people to whom she did not give birth call her “mother”; and

WHEREAS, Nola Lindsey continues to attend and financially support her childhood church in North Carolina, New Providence Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves among the church’s leadership; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Nola Carolyn Hughes Lindsey, an esteemed member of the Hampton Roads community and a caring neighbor, on the occasion of her 85th birthday; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Nola Carolyn Hughes Lindsey as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for her contributions to the community.
