HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 500
Commending Concord Baptist Church.

WHEREAS, in 2016, Concord Baptist Church celebrates its 175th anniversary of joyful worship, spiritual renewal, and outreach to the community and the world; and

WHEREAS, Concord Baptist Church, which is in the Caroline County community of Frog Level, was organized on July 10, 1841, and had 40 charter members; its roots can be traced to the Concord Meeting House, which is mentioned in a Caroline County deed book dated 1821; and

WHEREAS, after the Civil War, a group of members left the Concord Baptist Church in 1866 to form Second Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Dawn, and today, the two congregations have a strong relationship and take part in an annual pulpit exchange; and

WHEREAS, the original building housing Concord Baptist Church was a log structure; the current worship space was built in 1857 with bricks that were made on the premises, and as the church’s membership has increased, so have the facilities, which now include Pendleton Hall, a fellowship building containing partitioned classrooms and educational facilities; and

WHEREAS, 52 pastors have served Concord Baptist Church since its founding, including Robert Ryland, the first president of Richmond College, which is now part of the University of Richmond, and W. O. Carver, a noted missiologist; the current pastor is the Reverend Kevin Moen; and

WHEREAS, Concord Baptist Church is affiliated with the Baptist General Association of Virginia and Hermon Baptist Association; it takes great pride in being known as “The Friendly Church”; and

WHEREAS, the members of Concord Baptist Church extend a warm welcome to all visitors; following Biblical teachings to take care of others in the community and far away, church ministries have been organized in Kenya, the Dominican Republic, Tanzania, and Mexico; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Concord Baptist Church on the occasion of its 175th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Reverend Kevin Moen, pastor of Concord Baptist Church, as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for the church’s many years of service and outreach in the Commonwealth and abroad.
