WHEREAS, Colonial Heights American Legion Post 284, one of the largest American Legion posts in the Commonwealth, has worked to support and honor local veterans and provide dedicated volunteer service to the entire Colonial Heights community and the Tri-Cities area for 70 years; and

WHEREAS, established in 1946 with 86 charter members under Wilbur S. Dishman, American Legion Post 284 held its first meeting at what was then Colonial Heights City Hall; the post held meetings in several local buildings before purchasing its current location on Springdale Avenue in 1958; and

WHEREAS, American Legion Post 284 has grown to include 1,150 members, becoming the largest post in Virginia American Legion District 11 and the third-largest post in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, making significant contributions to Colonial Heights throughout its history, American Legion Post 284 has raised funds for many local causes and projects, including the construction of Shepherd Stadium, which hosts numerous civic activities; and

WHEREAS, American Legion Post 284 supports the Colonial Heights War Memorial, the United States Army Quartermaster’s Museum, the United States Army Women’s Museum, and the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center to honor the service and sacrifices of all veterans; and

WHEREAS, American Legion Post 284 empowers the youth of the community through American Legion Boys State and Girls State programs, donations to area schools, and several generous scholarship opportunities; the post supports local families through food deliveries and assistance during the holidays; and

WHEREAS, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 284, the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 284, and the Post 284 American Legion Riders all make unique contributions to local charitable causes supporting youth, active duty and convalescent veterans and their families, and first responders; and

WHEREAS, American Legion Post 284 leads by example and has inspired countless other members of the community to take an active role in bettering the quality of life of their fellow Colonial Heights residents; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Colonial Heights American Legion Post 284 for its service to veterans and the residents of Colonial Heights on the occasion of its 70th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Colonial Heights American Legion Post 284 as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for its contributions to the community.
