Commending the Danville Cancer Association, Inc.

WHEREAS, the Danville Cancer Association, Inc., which has admirably worked for more than 50 years to improve the quality of life for people in Danville and Pittsylvania County living with cancer, was honored as the 2016 recipient of the B. R. Ashby, M.D. Award for Outstanding Community Service from the Danville Regional Foundation; and

WHEREAS, the Danville Cancer Association was organized in 1959 and incorporated in 1976; in its early years, the association had three objectives: research, education, and patient services; today, the Danville Cancer Association’s efforts center on assisting patients and educational outreach; and

WHEREAS, with a goal of improving the quality of life for people in the community living with cancer, the mission of the Danville Cancer Association is to assist with the cost of cancer-related medications, travel, medical supplies and equipment, and other special medical needs; and

WHEREAS, all funds donated to the Danville Cancer Association benefit local residents; the association, which celebrates 40 years of incorporation in 2016, is a partner agency of the United Way of Danville-Pittsylvania County and is supported by the Danville Regional Foundation, the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region, the J.T. - Minnie Maude Charitable Trust, and other organizations; and

WHEREAS, the Danville Cancer Association offers financial, educational, and emotional support to patients in Danville and Pittsylvania County and sponsors a support group for people in the community who have cancer; it meets monthly and provides information on a variety of topics; and

WHEREAS, each year, the Danville Cancer Association helps approximately 250 people living with cancer; the nonprofit association also hosts an annual Celebration of Life event, honoring local cancer survivors; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Danville Cancer Association, Inc., for receiving the 2016 B. R. Ashby, M.D. Award for Outstanding Community Service from the Danville Regional Foundation; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Danville Cancer Association, Inc., as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the association’s generous support and exceptional service to people living with cancer in Danville and Pittsylvania County.
