Commending Captain Florent Groberg, USA, Ret.

WHEREAS, Captain Florent Groberg, USA, Ret., of McLean, who saved the lives of several fellow soldiers in Afghanistan, was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2015 for his valorous actions; and

WHEREAS, born in France, Captain Groberg grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, and became a citizen of the United States in 2001; driven by a strong sense of patriotism, he joined the United States Army in 2008; and

WHEREAS, Captain Groberg served two tours in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom, including as a platoon leader and executive officer in charge of logistics, then was selected to lead a personal security detachment for a colonel; and

WHEREAS, while on an operation, Captain Groberg identified an Afghan man he believed to be a suicide bomber and tackled the man to the ground, forcing him to detonate his suicide vest prematurely; and

WHEREAS, Captain Groberg sustained severe injuries to his leg in the engagement, but his quick thinking and heroic actions saved the lives of many members of the detail; he received the Army Achievement Medal and the Bronze Star Medal; and

WHEREAS, Captain Groberg was presented the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama in November 2015, becoming the 10th living recipient of the award for actions in Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, Captain Groberg is an exemplar of the bravery under pressure and dedication to duty demonstrated by all members of the United States Armed Forces; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Captain Florent Groberg, USA, Ret., on receiving the Medal of Honor for his courageous actions in Afghanistan; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Captain Florent Groberg, USA, Ret., as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his service and sacrifices in defense of the Commonwealth and the United States.
