Celebrating the life of Joyce Slavin Scher.

WHEREAS, Joyce Slavin Scher, a vibrant woman who took an active role in civic and community affairs in Richmond and throughout the Commonwealth, died on December 16, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Scher was a leader in Richmond’s Jewish community; she was one of the first two girls to become Bat Mitzvah at Temple Beth-El and later became president of both Temple Beth-El Sisterhood and the local chapter of Hadassah; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Scher’s creative vision and entrepreneurial energy led her to cofound Victoria Charles Ltd., her eclectic and stylish jewelry boutique in the West End, which continues to serve the community; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Scher became an activist for gay and lesbian equality, cofounding Mothers and Others to advocate against discrimination; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Scher was recognized by Equality Virginia in April 2015 as an OUTStanding Virginian; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Scher will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by numerous family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Joyce Slavin Scher, a respected leader in the Richmond community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joyce Slavin Scher as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
