16105613DWHEREAS, Geraldine R. Johnson of Richmond, an innovative, longtime educator who helped countless students achieve success in and out of the classroom, died on September 6, 2015; and
WHEREAS, a native of Richmond, Geraldine “Geri” R. Johnson graduated from Armstrong High School and Virginia Union University; she began her career as a teacher at Janie Porter Barrett School for Girls in Hanover County; and
WHEREAS, Geri Johnson then worked at a prep school in Manassas until 1962 when she accepted a position at Fairfield Court Elementary School; she earned the respect of her peers and students for her professionalism and passion for the importance of a good education; and
WHEREAS, during her long and fulfilling career as a teacher, Geri Johnson went above and beyond to provide her students with the highest quality learning materials, and she worked to ensure that students in need received support and encouragement; and
WHEREAS, Geri Johnson created a public safety patrol program for students, worked with Armstrong-Kennedy High School to establish the Fairfield Court Elementary School Junior ROTC Drill Corps, and facilitated student trips to Camp Hanover; and
WHEREAS, as the intervention teacher for fifth-grade students who had been held back, Geri Johnson helped students understand complex concepts through experiments and other hands-on learning methods; she was named the 1987 Intervention Teacher of the Year by Richmond Public Schools, after her class finished the year scoring in the 90th percentile on standardized tests; and
WHEREAS, Geri Johnson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her daughters, Valerie and Tanya, and numerous other family members, friends, and former students; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Geraldine R. Johnson, a devoted educator in Richmond; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Geraldine R. Johnson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
