Celebrating the life of Margaret Edwina Clay Crews.

WHEREAS, Margaret Edwina Clay Crews, an admired educator who imparted her love of literature and the joys of learning to countless students in the City of Richmond, died on January 1, 2016; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Richmond, Margaret Edwina “Wina” Clay Crews grew up in Jackson Ward; she earned a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Union University and completed graduate-level courses at Columbia University in the City of New York; and

WHEREAS, Wina Crews began her career as a teacher at Armstrong High School, her alma mater, in 1957; she later joined the faculty of Thomas Jefferson High School, where she worked for several decades until her well-earned retirement in 1992; and

WHEREAS, Wina Crews touched many lives throughout her 35-year career in education, inspiring students and peers alike through her kindness, grace, and passion for lifelong learning; and

WHEREAS, working to enhance the community through many civic and social organizations, Wina Crews was a member of the local chapter of Girl Friends, Inc., Edgehill Civic Association, Virginia Union University Panther 100 Club, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; and

WHEREAS, Wina Crews lived her faith through her actions and enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as a life member of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, where she was an active member of the Saint Anne’s Guild; and

WHEREAS, a caring and supportive wife, mother, and grandmother, Wina Crews was predeceased by her husband, Jerry, and one son, Jerry, Jr.; she will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her son, Keith; four grandchildren; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Margaret Edwina Clay Crews, a devoted educator in Richmond; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Margaret Edwina Clay Crews as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
