WHEREAS, in 2015, Dollar Tree, Inc., a Chesapeake-based variety store, became the leading discount retailer in North America after the acquisition of Family Dollar; and

WHEREAS, Dollar Tree traces its earliest roots to 1953, when K. R. Perry opened a Ben Franklin variety store in downtown Norfolk; in 1986, Macon Brock, Doug Perry, and Ray Compton opened a chain of five stores called Only $1.00, which evolved to become Dollar Tree in the 1990s; and

WHEREAS, Dollar Tree offers customers national, regional, and private-label brands of housewares, glassware, dinnerware, cleaning supplies, food, snacks, candy, health and beauty items, toys, gifts, party supplies, crafting and teaching supplies, books, seasonal items, and many other products all priced at one dollar or less; and

WHEREAS, with a customer-oriented mission, Dollar Tree strives to create a welcoming environment in clean, well-lit stores, where shopping is both fun and affordable, and every member of the family can find a special treasure; and

WHEREAS, from its humble beginnings, Dollar Tree has grown to serve communities in 48 states and five provinces of Canada, and it opened its 5,000th store in 2014; with the acquisition of Family Dollar, a leading national discount retailer offering name brands and quality, private brand merchandise, Dollar Tree now operates a combined organization with more than 13,800 stores, sales greater than $20 billion annually, and more than 145,000 associates; and

WHEREAS, Dollar Tree, a Fortune 500 Company, operates stores under the brands of Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, and Dollar Tree Canada; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Dollar Tree, Inc., on being the largest single-priced retailer in the United States in 2015; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Bob Sasser, chief executive officer of Dollar Tree, Inc., as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the company’s commitment to serving customers throughout the Commonwealth and the United States by offering quality products at affordable prices.
