HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 448
Commending West Springfield High School.

WHEREAS, for 50 years, West Springfield High School in Fairfax County has provided local youth with an outstanding educational experience and helped prepare them for higher education, careers, and responsible citizenship; and

WHEREAS, established in 1966 with S. John Davis as its first principal, West Springfield High School now serves more than 2,200 students in grades nine through 12; and

WHEREAS, West Springfield High School offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities and athletics programs, and the West Springfield Spartans have claimed 29 state championships in multiple sports; and

WHEREAS, many former West Springfield Spartans have achieved success as professional athletes, including Jeremy Kapinos, James Dexter, Kara Lawson, Ryan Speier, Joe Saunders, Brian Carroll, and Jeff Carroll; and

WHEREAS, West Springfield High School offers students the opportunity to participate in acclaimed dance, theatre, and music programs; the West Springfield Dance Team holds six consecutive titles in the National Dance Alliance national championship; and

WHEREAS, West Springfield High School alumni have gone on to become respected leaders in their fields, including astronaut Patrick Forrester, actress Becky Ann Baker, and writer Edmund Brown; and

WHEREAS, each member of the faculty, administration, and staff at West Springfield High School contributes to motivating, inspiring, and educating the future leaders of Northern Virginia and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend West Springfield High School for its service to Fairfax County on the occasion of its 50th anniversary in 2016; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Michael Mukai, principal of West Springfield High School, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the school’s legacy of service to the young men and women of the Fairfax community.
