HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 445
Commending the Clintwood High School girls' basketball team.

WHEREAS, the Clintwood High School girls’ basketball team capped off an impressive season by winning the 2015 Virginia High School League Group 1A state basketball championship, the school’s third state title in girls’ basketball; and

WHEREAS, the members of the Clintwood High School girls’ basketball team defeated a talented team from Twin Valley High School 52 - 50 to claim the state title on March 11, 2015, at the Siegel Center in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, during the championship game, the Clintwood High School Greenwave took the lead in the middle of the first quarter, and was ahead by as much as 11 points in the third period, but Twin Valley mounted a dramatic comeback; and

WHEREAS, with 1.8 seconds remaining in the game, Kayla Mullins of Clintwood High School scored a basket on a rebound, bringing the final score to 52 - 50, claiming the school’s third state title in girls’ basketball; and

WHEREAS, the Clintwood High School girls’ basketball team won the state basketball championship in 1985 and 1989; in each game, they won with a final score of 52 points; and

WHEREAS, the Clintwood High School girls’ basketball team’s victory was a remarkable and fitting crowning achievement for the school in Dickenson County; at the end of the 2014 - 2015 academic year, it merged with neighboring Haysi High School to form Ridgeview High School; and

WHEREAS, the members of the Clintwood Greenwave girls’ basketball team are ably coached by Donnie Frazier and his staff; every member of the Clintwood High School community who attended the state championship game was aware of the significance of that final basketball game; and

WHEREAS, throughout the school’s final basketball season, the Clintwood High School players were greatly supported by their families, friends, students, and the entire school community; winning the 2015 state title was even more special as the game was the last time the Clintwood High School girls’ basketball team took to the court; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Clintwood High School girls’ basketball team for winning the 2015 Virginia High School League Group 1A state basketball championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Donnie Frazier, head coach of the Clintwood High School girls’ basketball team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the team’s stellar accomplishment and outstanding season.
