2016 SESSION
16105881DWHEREAS, Howard Meredith Campbell of Prospect, a public servant and community leader who served and safeguarded the community as a deputy sheriff and a volunteer firefighter, died on July 8, 2014; and
WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Prince Edward County, Howard “Pete” Meredith Campbell graduated from Prince Edward Academy and attended Central Virginia Community College, before graduating from the Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy; and
WHEREAS, during a 25-year career in law enforcement, Pete Campbell served as a deputy with the Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office and worked at the Piedmont Regional Jail; and
WHEREAS, Pete Campbell safeguarded the lives and property of his fellow residents as a volunteer firefighter with Prospect Volunteer Fire Department, Company 4, for more than 50 years, including as assistant chief and chief; and
WHEREAS, while working at Prospect Volunteer Fire Department, Pete Campbell became an expert on the company’s water trucks and designed a mini-pumper, which is still in operation after 20 years of use; he also headed the company’s annual Harvest Sale, which raised thousands of dollars to benefit the community; and
WHEREAS, desirous to be of further service to the community, Pete Campbell ran for and was elected to the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors in 2009 and 2013 and ably represented the residents of the Prospect District; and
WHEREAS, Pete Campbell offered his time and leadership to the local Masonic lodge and enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as a lifelong member of Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church; and
WHEREAS, Pete Campbell is fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 39 years, Linda; daughter, Meredith, and her family; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Howard Meredith Campbell; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Howard Meredith Campbell as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
