2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, Timothy John Longo, Sr., a veteran law-enforcement officer respected for his leadership and dedication to the community, will retire as Chief of the Charlottesville Police Department in 2016, after a 34-year career in public safety; and
WHEREAS, a native of Baltimore, Timothy Longo holds a bachelor’s degree from Towson University and a law degree from the University of Baltimore; he fulfilled a lifelong dream to serve as a law-enforcement officer when he joined the Baltimore Police Department in 1981; and
WHEREAS, over the course of his distinguished career with the Baltimore Police Department, Timothy Longo rose through the ranks from cadet to colonel/chief of technical services; he worked in several divisions and gained valuable experience and expertise that would serve him well as Chief of the Charlottesville Police Department; and
WHEREAS, after a stint with PSComm, LLC, a consulting firm in Maryland, Timothy Longo became the Chief of Police for the City of Charlottesville in 2001; his strong, stable leadership has helped the Charlottesville Police Department thrive and strengthen ties with the community; and
WHEREAS, as chief, Timothy Longo was responsible for 127 sworn police officers and 29 civilian support personnel; he gained the admiration of his officers for his boots-on-the-ground approach to leadership, often checking in with patrol officers on late shifts; and
WHEREAS, Timothy Longo worked to ensure that the members of the Charlottesville Police Department had the tools and training to best serve the community and that the department maintained full accreditation; he proudly helped create the Charlottesville Police Foundation to raise funds for the department; and
WHEREAS, building strong cohesion with other public safety organizations in Charlottesville and Albemarle County and at the University of Virginia, Timothy Longo oversaw reductions in violent crime, property crime, and overall crime rates during his time as chief; and
WHEREAS, Timothy Longo ably led the department through many high-profile cases that brought local, state, and national attention to the University of Virginia and the Charlottesville area; a reassuring public speaker, he earned respect for his honesty and transparency in challenging situations; and
WHEREAS, Timothy Longo is an advocate for relational policing, a method of community policing to cultivate trust and mutual respect with all members of the community; he opened dialogue with African Americans through open forums and one-on-one conversations with concerned citizens, and the Charlottesville Police Department has achieved overwhelming support from the University of Virginia students; and
WHEREAS, highly respected in the law-enforcement field, Timothy Longo has offered his time and talents to the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission, Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail Board, and Community Criminal Justice Board; and
WHEREAS, Timothy Longo has inspired a new generation of law-enforcement professionals as an instructor, lecturer, and adjunct professor for several departments, organizations, and universities, and he has received many awards and accolades for his good work; and
WHEREAS, after his well-earned retirement, Timothy Longo plans to seek new opportunities to serve the community and spend more time with his wife, Robin, and their children and grandchildren; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Timothy John Longo, Sr., for his legacy of service on the occasion of his retirement as Chief of the Charlottesville Police Department; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Timothy John Longo, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his exceptional community leadership and commitment to the residents of Charlottesville.
