HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 422
Commending First Colonial High School.

WHEREAS, First Colonial High School, an outstanding public secondary school in Virginia Beach, celebrates 50 years of educating and preparing students for bright futures during the 2015 - 2016 school year; and

WHEREAS, in 1966, First Colonial High School opened its doors to more than 1,320 students in grades eight through 12; during its 50th anniversary year, the school served more than 2,000 students in grades nine through 12; and

WHEREAS, since opening the Legal Studies Academy, First Colonial High School also welcomes students from all areas of Virginia Beach who are considering a career in law and law-related fields or have an interest in legal and ethical issues; and

WHEREAS, First Colonial High School has been led by outstanding educators committed to the school’s mission statement: “empowering all students to become lifelong learners and responsible, productive citizens in a global society”; and

WHEREAS, First Colonial High School maintains its accreditation by continuing to uphold the Virginia Department of Education’s Standards of Learning; and

WHEREAS, students competing in sports and other extracurricular competitions for First Colonial High School have achieved numerous district titles, at least 30 regional titles, and 12 state championship titles; student-athletes and other student competitors have advanced to compete nationally and internationally, both at collegiate and professional levels; and

WHEREAS, First Colonial High School graduates have used their education to make a difference in society through public service and careers in the military, professional sports, entertainment, law, medicine, business, education, engineering, architecture, agriculture, technology, hospitality, and local, state, and federal government; and

WHEREAS, celebration activities for First Colonial High School’s 50th anniversary will be held throughout the 2015 - 2016 school year; anyone with a connection to the school will have opportunities to proudly wear the school’s colors of Columbia blue and yellow and gather with friends to reminisce, make new memories, and set future goals; and

WHEREAS, each member of the faculty, administration, and staff at First Colonial High School contributes to motivating, inspiring, and educating the future leaders of Virginia Beach and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend First Colonial High School on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Nancy Farrell, principal of First Colonial High School, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the school’s legacy of academic excellence.
