WHEREAS, Thomas Jones, an experienced law-enforcement officer who has served and protected the community as Sheriff of Charlotte County for 28 years, is now the longest-serving sheriff in the Commonwealth in 2016; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Jones joined the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office in 1981 and was first elected sheriff in 1988; since that time, the size of the office has nearly doubled, growing from 16 full-time officers to 35 in 2016; and

WHEREAS, during his nearly three decades as sheriff, Thomas Jones worked to ensure that the members of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office received the tools and training to best serve the residents of the large, rural county in Southside Virginia; and

WHEREAS, under Thomas Jones’ able leadership, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office has responded promptly to calls for service, carried out criminal investigations, provided court room security and process service, maintained operation of the Charlotte County Jail, and conducted valuable outreach programs to local youths; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Jones has helped the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office adapt to changes in policing and advances in technology, and he has encouraged his officers to build trust and mutual respect with members of the community; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Jones is an exemplar of the professionalism, dedication, and care for the community demonstrated by law-enforcement officers throughout the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Thomas Jones, Sheriff of Charlotte County, on being the longest-serving sheriff in the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Thomas Jones as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his legacy of service to the Commonwealth.
