Commending the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club.

WHEREAS, in 2015, the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club, one of the oldest civic clubs in the city, proudly celebrated 90 years of outstanding and dedicated service to the community and its young people; and

WHEREAS, the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club, which was chartered on July 20, 1925, is part of Kiwanis International, whose mission is to serve the children of the world; local clubs help improve the lives of children in their communities through hands-on service; and

WHEREAS, currently more than 50 men and women belong to the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club and represent the area’s diverse population; the group raises funds through holiday peanut sales, an annual pancake breakfast, and many other activities; and

WHEREAS, the objectives of the Kiwanis organization are to work for the betterment of the community; encourage caring human relationships; promote high standards; develop an active and informed citizenry; foster enduring friendships, altruistic service, and stronger communities; and strengthen informed public opinion and idealism; and

WHEREAS, members of the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club take part in local events, including the Halloween Costume Parade in support of area youth; the club works with downtown merchants to organize and stage the parade, which is a popular family event; and

WHEREAS, the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club has a long-established partnership with the Salvation Army of Waynesboro, and members readily volunteer as bell ringers during the annual Red Kettle Christmas Drive; and

WHEREAS, many organizations have benefited from the work of the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club over the years, including the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, the Augusta Regional Free Clinic, the Boys and Girls Club of Waynesboro, Staunton & Augusta County, Leaders for Tomorrow, the Central Shenandoah Valley Office on Youth, and the Valley Alliance for Education; and

WHEREAS, the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club has sponsored leadership and service training programs for teenagers through Key Clubs at area high schools; student members of the Key Clubs also are eligible to apply for an annual scholarship; and

WHEREAS, the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club works with the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge to help area youth; funds are disbursed annually to help young people, and through this initiative and many others, the club hopes to continue its vital work for many years to come; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club on the occasion of its 90th anniversary in 2015; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for the organization’s longstanding commitment to improving the lives of young people in Waynesboro and Augusta County.
