2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, Jason Steinbaum, a 1988 graduate of the University of Virginia who is a longtime advocate for the nation of Kosovo, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Merit by the government of Kosovo; and
WHEREAS, Jason Steinbaum received the Medal of Merit from the University of Virginia alumna and President of Kosovo Atifete Jahjaga on February 22, 2016, George Washington’s birthday, for his many years of advocacy on behalf of Kosovo’s independence and international recognition; and
WHEREAS, Jason Steinbaum’s efforts to help the country in southeastern Europe began more than 20 years ago when he was a staff member for Eliot Engel, a member of the United States House of Representatives; and
WHEREAS, Representative Engel’s congressional district in New York has a large Kosovar and Albanian population; soon after joining his staff, Jason Steinbaum became interested in helping Kosovo’s Albanian population; and
WHEREAS, currently, Jason Steinbaum is minority staff director for the United States House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere; he previously served for six years as chief of staff for Representative Engel; and
WHEREAS, Jason Steinbaum cites his efforts on behalf of the young Republic of Kosovo as the most fulfilling part of his work on Capitol Hill, pointing out that the people of Kosovo have much gratitude for the United States, and the country strongly supports the United States’ work in the region; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Jason Steinbaum for his efforts on behalf of the nation of Kosovo and for receiving its Presidential Medal of Merit; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jason Steinbaum as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his outstanding advocacy on behalf of Kosovo’s independence and international recognition.
