HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 39 Celebrating the life of Alison Bailey Parker.

WHEREAS, Alison Bailey Parker, a passionate and hardworking journalist, a devoted servant to the Roanoke Valley community, and a beloved daughter and friend, died on August 26, 2015; and

WHEREAS, a native of Annapolis, Maryland, Alison Parker grew up in Collinsville and graduated from Martinsville High School, where she excelled in dance, gymnastics, and swimming and was a member of jazz and concert bands; and

WHEREAS, Alison Parker also attended the Piedmont Governor’s School for Math, Science, and Technology and was a member of an award-winning robotics team; she earned a bachelor’s degree from James Madison University, where she joined Alpha Phi Sorority, served as news editor of the student newspaper, and tutored first-year students in calculus; and

WHEREAS, during her college summers, Alison Parker worked to strengthen and enhance the community through her involvement with the Martinsville Uptown Revitalization Association and the United Way, as well as interning with CBS-affiliate WDBJ-7; and

WHEREAS, after graduation, Alison Parker began her career as a journalist with ABC-affiliate WCTI-12 in North Carolina as the bureau chief covering Camp Lejeune, where she relished the opportunity to cover hard news on a tight schedule; and

WHEREAS, Alison Parker returned to Roanoke as a morning show reporter for WDBJ-7 in 2014; she was a fixture of many local residents’ mornings, greeting viewers with her joyful smile and upbeat personality; and

WHEREAS, Alison Parker will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her parents, Andy and Barbara; brother, Drew; significant other, Chris; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Alison Bailey Parker, a devoted journalist and a beloved member of the Roanoke Valley community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Alison Bailey Parker as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
