WHEREAS, on December 4, 2015, Katherine Slover of Montgomery County, Maryland, courageously helped ensure the safe rescue of 20 people when the White’s Ferry was set adrift on the Potomac River; and

WHEREAS, Katherine Slover and her husband, Dusty, were planning to take White’s Ferry to Leesburg when they noticed that the underwater guide cable had snapped, and the ferry, which had 20 passengers and 12 cars on board, was caught in the current and had begun to drift down river; and

WHEREAS, at great personal risk, Katherine Slover left her vehicle and rushed to keep sight of the ferry, crawling under a tree which had fallen over a small creek at the bottom of an embankment to reach the water’s edge; and

WHEREAS, Katherine Slover spotted the ferry, which had been skillfully steered aground, and gained the attention of the captain; she sustained minor injuries as she and the captain worked to secure the ferry to nearby trees with ropes and a chain; and

WHEREAS, the White’s Ferry’s work boat arrived to stabilize the ferry and help passengers disembark; thanks to Katherine Slover’s actions, no passengers were hurt and the ferry was back in operation later that day; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Katherine Slover for her heroic efforts to help rescue the passengers and crew of White’s Ferry in December 2015; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Katherine Slover as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for her quick thinking and selfless actions in service of others.
