Commending Drew Hunter.

WHEREAS, Drew Hunter, a dedicated and exceptionally talented student-athlete at Loudoun Valley High School, set a national record, becoming only the second high school student in the United States to run an indoor mile in less than four minutes; and

WHEREAS, Drew Hunter finished a one mile run in 3:58.25 at the Armory Track Invitational in New York City on February 6, 2016; and

WHEREAS, the previous record of 3:59.86, which had stood for 15 years, was set on the same track in 2001 by Alan Webb, who had been coached by Drew Hunter’s parents at South Lakes High School in Reston; and

WHEREAS, named the Gatorade National Boys’ Cross Country Runner of the Year, Drew Hunter had previously become the first high school athlete to complete a 3,000-meter run in less than eight minutes, won the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championship by the largest margin for a male champion since 2009, and ran the fastest 5K in Virginia history at the Third Battle Invitational; and

WHEREAS, in November 2015, Drew Hunter also helped lead the Loudoun Valley High School Vikings to the Virginia High School League Group 4A state cross country title, topping the individual standings with his time of 15:04; and

WHEREAS, Drew Hunter will continue running indoor and outdoor races throughout his senior year at Loudoun Valley High School and will attend the University of Oregon in the fall of 2016; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Drew Hunter, an exceptional young runner in Loudoun County, for setting a new national record for the fastest indoor mile; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Drew Hunter as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his achievements and best wishes for the future.
