HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 375
Commending Thomas A. Mason.

WHEREAS, Thomas A. Mason, a respected professional engineer, will retire as Director of Public Works and Assistant Town Manager of the Town of Leesburg on April 30, 2016, after more than 30 years of service to the community; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Mason, a native son of the Commonwealth, graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering; and

WHEREAS, following his graduation, Thomas Mason worked for a number of engineering consulting firms in the Commonwealth, including Baldwin and Greg, VVKR, and Betz, Converse, Murdoch, Inc., during which time he became a Licensed Professional Engineer in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Mason joined the staff of the Town of Leesburg as director of engineering in January 1985, and in January 1986, he became director of the combined Department of Engineering and Public Works; and

WHEREAS, during his 30-year tenure with the Town of Leesburg, Thomas Mason oversaw the design and construction of many new public facilities that have benefited the residents of Leesburg, including the Town Hall and parking garage, Ida Lee Park Recreation Center, the Police Department Public Safety Center, and the Public Works Maintenance Facility; and

WHEREAS, under Thomas Mason’s leadership, the Town of Leesburg adopted a comprehensive Design and Construction Standards Manual that has ensured new development throughout Leesburg is built to the highest standards, thus protecting the members of the community; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Mason was instrumental in obtaining federal, state, and private developer funding for major transportation network improvements in Leesburg, such as Battlefield Parkway and the widening of the Route 15 Bypass from two lanes to four lanes; he also oversaw the design and construction of those projects; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Mason’s professional contributions to the Town of Leesburg will be felt for many years to come; after his well-earned retirement, he plans to spend more time with his beloved family; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Thomas A. Mason on the occasion of his retirement as Director of Public Works and Assistant Town Manager of the Town of Leesburg; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Thomas A. Mason, P.E., as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his service to the citizens of the Town of Leesburg and best wishes on a happy retirement.
