HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 345
Commending The Boeing Company.

WHEREAS, founded by William Boeing in 1916, The Boeing Company has become a leader in the commercial and military aerospace industries, setting standards for excellence in science and technology; and

WHEREAS, in its 100-year history, Boeing has been responsible for innovations in passenger airplanes, military aircraft, missiles, satellites, and spacecraft; the company has helped the United States and the world cross frontier after frontier in aerospace technologies; and

WHEREAS, Boeing built the Douglas DC-3, the first passenger airplane widely used by airlines; the iconic B-52 Stratofortress, in use by the United States military for 60 years; and the 707 and 747, which launched the jetliner era; in addition, every American spacecraft that has carried astronauts into space was designed and built by companies that are now part of Boeing; and

WHEREAS, as a key component of both commercial aerospace operations and national defense, Boeing employs more than 2,000 individuals at multiple locations in the Commonwealth and indirectly supports thousands of additional jobs; and

WHEREAS, the Boeing Government Operations office in Arlington keeps the company connected with the federal, state, and local governments, as well as think tanks, public policy groups, and other associations, and advocates for policies and investments that benefit the aerospace industry and help ensure the continued global technological leadership of the United States; and

WHEREAS, Boeing International, also based in Arlington, strives to strengthen Boeing’s global presence and works with country and regional offices to engage stakeholders, coordinate local activities, and provide strategic counsel; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is also home to Boeing Defense, Space & Security, which comprises the company’s Network & Space Systems office, Global Services & Support team, Boeing Research & Technology, and Phantom Works, a cutting-edge visualization and demonstration facility; and

WHEREAS, in 2016, Boeing’s Regional Headquarters earned the prestigious LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in the area of Building Design and Construction; of the approximately 800 LEED-certified sites in the Arlington area, only 61 have achieved Gold certification; and

WHEREAS, Boeing has succeeded thanks to the hard work and dedication of countless employees over the years, many of whom are active leaders in their communities; in 2014, The Boeing Company and its employees in the Commonwealth contributed more than $9 million and many volunteer hours to worthy charitable causes; and

WHEREAS, Boeing will commemorate its 100th anniversary with a Founders Day celebration on July 15, 2016, as well as events throughout the year; the company launched a traveling exhibition on the history of flight called “Above and Beyond,” and a centennial history book, Higher: 100 Years of Boeing, was released in 2015; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend The Boeing Company, an outstanding corporate citizen in the Commonwealth, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to The Boeing Company as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the company’s ongoing legacy of excellence in the aerospace field and many contributions to the Commonwealth.
