HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 327
Celebrating the life of Antoinette Poulson Williams.

WHEREAS, Antoinette Poulson Williams of Suffolk, a devoted wife and mother who became an emergency room nurse after raising her family and who was an active volunteer in the community and a person of great faith, died on January 18, 2016; and

WHEREAS, Antoinette Williams was born in Suffolk and graduated from Suffolk High School; she later enrolled at the Obici School of Practical Nursing, and when she graduated in 1969, she received the Business and Professional Woman’s Club Award for Outstanding Nursing Achievement; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated and compassionate health care provider, Antoinette Williams worked as an emergency room nurse at Obici Hospital until she was 80; she made an art form of assisting people in need of emergency care; and

WHEREAS, after retiring from nursing, Antoinette Williams, who was a longtime volunteer for many community organizations, continued to work as a volunteer in the hospital auxiliary’s gift shop; and

WHEREAS, Antoinette Williams gave back to her community in many ways; she was a member of the Suffolk Woman’s Club for 64 years and served as its president from 1988 through 1992; she also belonged to the Pilot Club of Suffolk, the Suffolk chapter of AARP, and the Suffolk Art League; and

WHEREAS, other organizations that benefited from Antoinette Williams’ advice and guidance were the Suffolk Sister Cities organization and the Suffolk Christian Woman’s Club; additionally, she served as a senior intern to the Honorable Norman Sisisky, a former member of Virginia’s Congressional Delegation; and

WHEREAS, Antoinette Williams was a devoted member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Suffolk; she joined the church in 1943 and served in many capacities, including as a member of a committee that published a book about the church’s stained glass windows; and

WHEREAS, Antoinette Williams was predeceased by Howard, her loving husband of 64 years; sons, Craig and Bruce; and grandson, Timothy; she will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her children, Joan and Ronald, and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Antoinette Poulson Williams of Suffolk, a loving wife and mother, a dedicated emergency room nurse, an active volunteer in many community organizations, and a woman of great faith; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Antoinette Poulson Williams as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
