Celebrating the life of Ray Wayne Gandee, M.D.

WHEREAS, Ray Wayne Gandee, M.D., of Roanoke, an esteemed physician who was chief medical officer and president of Carilion Clinic Physicians, and a devoted husband and father, died on January 28, 2016; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Gandee was a native of South Charleston, West Virginia, and was a first-generation high school and college graduate; he earned a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University and a medical degree from the West Virginia University School of Medicine; and

WHEREAS, after completing a medical residency in radiology at the University of Virginia, Dr. Gandee moved to Roanoke in 1981 to start a private radiology practice; and

WHEREAS, in 2006, Dr. Gandee became chair of the radiology department at Carilion, a large nonprofit health care organization; he helped lead the organization during a time of great change as the company transitioned to providing multi-specialty physician services in health care clinic settings; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Gandee was promoted to chief medical officer of the health care organization in 2011, and in that position, he diligently worked to ensure that Carilion successfully delivered team-based, patient-centered care; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Gandee retired in 2014 after a distinguished medical career; in addition to his many contributions to the community as a leader of one of the area’s foremost health care providers, Dr. Gandee is remembered for his strong work ethic and his love for his friends and family; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Gandee especially enjoyed good fellowship, playing basketball, listening to and performing music, all kinds of food, and the outdoors; he loved spending time in a natural setting, whether walking, driving, riding, or on the water; and

WHEREAS, with a zest for life, enthusiasm for his work, and careful attention to the patients of Carilion Clinic and the staff who cared for them, Dr. Gandee was beloved and greatly respected by all with whom he came in contact; his colleagues paid tribute by creating a video celebrating his love of life and empathy for those who were ill; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Gandee will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his wife, Marianne; children, Richard, Braden, and Kristen, and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Ray Wayne Gandee, M.D., a highly esteemed physician, who was the former chief medical officer and president of Carilion Clinic Physicians, and a devoted husband and father; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ray Wayne Gandee, M.D., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
