HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 307
Celebrating the life of First Lieutenant Michael Thomas Ziegler, USA.

WHEREAS, First Lieutenant Michael Thomas Ziegler, USA, a beloved member of the Fairfax County community, died on December 30, 2015; and

WHEREAS, a native of Fairfax County, First Lieutenant Ziegler grew up in Centreville and graduated from Westfield High School, where he was an active member of the marching band and swimming, crew, and lacrosse teams; and

WHEREAS, at the age of 15, First Lieutenant Ziegler achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America; his Eagle Scout service project, Operation Brief Our Troops, which collected underwear, t-shirts, and socks for convalescent veterans at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, earned recognition from the United States Army Disabled Soldiers Support System; and

WHEREAS, desirous to be of service to his country, First Lieutenant Ziegler accepted an appointment to the United States Military Academy, where he served as company honor representative and as a member of the Cadet Honor Code Board; he graduated with the Class of 2013 and was commissioned in the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, while at the United States Military Academy, First Lieutenant Ziegler also served his fellow cadets as company athletics coach for basketball and swimming and volunteered with the West Point Youth Impact Program, with which he mentored underprivileged youth in New York City; and

WHEREAS, First Lieutenant Ziegler completed the Infantry Basic Officer Leadership Course and had been preparing to attend the elite United States Army Ranger School, one of the country’s most physically and mentally demanding military leadership schools; and

WHEREAS, First Lieutenant Ziegler will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his parents, Barbara and Mark; siblings, Mark, Lauren, Ashley, Matthew, Melissa, Gregory, and Carolyn; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of First Lieutenant Michael Thomas Ziegler, USA; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of First Lieutenant Michael Thomas Ziegler, USA, as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
