16103603DWHEREAS, Anne Marie Canali Hermann, a member of the Arlington County Community Services Board who worked tirelessly to eliminate discrimination based on gender, disability, and age and effectively advocated for the rights of people who are affected by such discrimination, retired from the Board in 2015; and
WHEREAS, Anne Marie Hermann, who has lived in Arlington since 1975, is a native of Canandaigua, New York; she received a bachelor’s degree from Mercyhurst College, now known as Mercyhurst University, a master’s degree from Boston College, and a law degree from the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University; and
WHEREAS, in 2005, Anne Marie Hermann was appointed to the Arlington County Community Services Board; she was co-chair of the Mental Health Committee and worked to eliminate discrimination related to gender, disability, or age; and
WHEREAS, prior to her service as a member of the Community Services Board, Anne Marie Hermann was chair of a regional committee that examined mental health services available to adults 65 and older either ready to be discharged from, or at risk of being admitted to, a state psychiatric hospital; the group’s work helped to establish the Regional Older Adult Facilities Mental Health Support Team (RAFT); and
WHEREAS, Anne Marie Hermann continues her work on the RAFT Oversight Committee; the program serves a segment of the elderly adult population who have serious mental illness or dementia with difficult behaviors; and
WHEREAS, additionally, Anne Marie Hermann was a member of the planning group for the Mary Marshall Assisted Living Residence in Arlington, which serves low-income residents with mental illness or intellectual disabilities; she continues to be involved with the facility as a member of its Advisory Council; and
WHEREAS, Anne Marie Hermann has been honored for her exceptional dedication to people with mental illness; she received the Arlington County Community Services Board Chairman’s Award for Advocacy in 2006, 2007, and 2015; and
WHEREAS, in 2014, Anne Marie Hermann was honored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness Northern Virginia for her many years of advocacy on behalf of individuals living with mental illness; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Anne Marie Canali Hermann of Arlington on the occasion of her retirement from the Arlington County Community Services Board for her many years of dedication and service; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Anne Marie Canali Hermann as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for her tireless work and advocacy on behalf of people with mental illness and intellectual disabilities.
