WHEREAS, in 1779, during the Revolutionary War, the General Assembly voted favorably on Thomas Jefferson’s proposal to move Virginia’s capital inland to Richmond for safety from British raids and for a more central location with an inland port; and

WHEREAS, prior to the construction of the current Capitol building, the General Assembly convened from 1780 to 1788 in very humble commercial buildings at the corner of what is now 14th Street and Cary Street in downtown Richmond; and

WHEREAS, during that span of years in those humble structures, outstanding statesmen of Virginia, as well as founding fathers of the nation, guided Virginia through the final years of the Revolutionary War and laid the foundation for the freedoms and protections that the citizens of Virginia and the United States now enjoy; and

WHEREAS, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, founded on October 11, 1890, is a nonprofit volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for all; and

WHEREAS, on October 11, 1915, the Commonwealth Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution facilitated the creation of a plaque, mounted on a custom cast concrete base and set at an angle on the corner of the property at 14th Street and Cary Street in the City of Richmond, that commemorated the meeting place of the General Assembly from 1780 - 1788; and

WHEREAS, 100 years later on Sunday, October 11, 2015, the Commonwealth Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution commemorated the 125th anniversary of its parent organization by rededicating the same historical plaque, currently mounted on a prominent wall of the new Marriott Residence Inn on the historical site of the 18th-century buildings where the General Assembly met; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Commonwealth Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution for its work to preserve the history and heritage of the Commonwealth and the General Assembly on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the founding of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Commonwealth Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for its devoted service to Virginia and the United States.
