WHEREAS, after more than three decades of service, the Honorable Walter A. Stosch, who ably represented the residents of parts of Hanover County and Henrico County in the Virginia House of Delegates and the Senate of Virginia and was named Republican Leader Emeritus, retired from public office in 2016; and
WHEREAS, a native of Fredericksburg, Walter Stosch was reared in the Northern Neck and honorably served his country as a member of the United States Army; he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Richmond and practiced as a certified public accountant in Richmond; and
WHEREAS, desirous to be of further service to the Commonwealth, Walter Stosch ran for and was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates and represented the residents of part of Henrico County in the 73rd District from 1983 to 1992; and
WHEREAS, Walter Stosch was then elected to the Senate of Virginia, representing the residents of parts of the Counties of Hanover and Henrico in the 12th District; he strove to build consensus and mutual respect among his fellow elected officials and rose to become the President Pro Tempore of the Senate in his final term; and
WHEREAS, during his time in the General Assembly, Walter Stosch introduced and supported many important pieces of legislation for the benefit of all Virginians; he took a special interest in transportation and health insurance issues, was a champion for higher education and the community college system, and helped invigorate economic growth and job creation in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, respected for his straightforward approach to leadership and problem solving, Walter Stosch served on numerous committees during his time in elected office; his expertise as the General Assembly’s only certified public accountant served him well as chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, and he was crucial to negotiations on the state budget; and
WHEREAS, a man of great integrity, Walter Stosch served the Commonwealth with the utmost professionalism and distinction, and his wise leadership will be missed by colleagues on both sides of the aisle; after his well-earned retirement, he plans to seek new opportunities to serve the community and spend more time with his beloved family; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Honorable Walter A. Stosch, a dedicated public servant and a true Virginia gentleman who worked to foster understanding and consensus in state government, on the occasion of his retirement as a member of the Senate of Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Honorable Walter A. Stosch as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his diligent service to the residents of the Counties of Hanover and Henrico and the Commonwealth.
