HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 278
Commending Bechtel Corporation.

WHEREAS, Bechtel Corporation was honored by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and Cornerstones, Inc., with a prestigious 2016 Best of Reston Award in the Corporate Business Leader category for its many contributions to area nonprofit organizations and events; and

WHEREAS, the Best of Reston awards honor individuals, organizations, and companies that have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to helping others and improving the lives of people throughout the greater Reston area; and

WHEREAS, since opening its corporate operations headquarters in Reston in 2012, Bechtel has been wholeheartedly committed to improving the quality of life in the area by supporting worthwhile community groups and encouraging its employees to volunteer and become active in area nonprofit organizations; and

WHEREAS, the Reston community has benefited in countless ways from Bechtel’s corporate generosity, and working with schools is a major part of Bechtel’s community endeavors; the Bechtel Employees Club has adopted Lake Anne Elementary School, and the company also has supported FIRST robotics teams at four area schools; and

WHEREAS, Bechtel Corporation also is a major supporter of the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce’s annual Ethics Day program for high school seniors; additionally, company employees—as part of Team Bechtel—participated in the Northern Virginia Tour de Cure fundraising ride for the American Diabetes Association; and

WHEREAS, another group of Bechtel employees has taken part in the Dulles Day Festival & Plane Pull fundraising event that helps Special Olympics Virginia provide year-round training and competitions to more than 11,000 athletes; and

WHEREAS, Bechtel Corporation has been a valued member of the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce since 2012 and actively supports local businesses by sharing best practices with small companies, agencies, and government leaders; and

WHEREAS, a Bechtel-led team built the Washington Metro’s Silver Line subway, and during the construction period, the company supported many local charities and organizations; one of Bechtel’s core values is to be an active member of the community when it undertakes one of its renowned mega-projects; and

WHEREAS, by enhancing educational opportunities for area students, raising funds for nonprofit health and medical organizations, and supporting civic causes in greater Reston, Bechtel and its employees have helped improve the lives of hundreds of people; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Bechtel Corporation for being a well-deserved recipient of the 2016 Best of Reston Award in the Corporate Business Leader category; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to James Lamble of Bechtel Corporation as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for the company’s proud commitment to the betterment of the Reston area through its generous volunteer and financial support of numerous local organizations.
