Celebrating the life of Ashby B. Allen.

WHEREAS, Ashby B. Allen, a prominent attorney in the City of Richmond who was respected throughout the country for his skill and expertise as a trial lawyer, died on October 23, 2015; and

WHEREAS, a native of Victoria, Ashby Allen received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia, then joined many of the other young men of his generation in service to the nation during World War II as a pilot in the United States Army Air Corps; and

WHEREAS, after his honorable military service, Ashby Allen earned a law degree from the University of Virginia and founded the firm of Allen, Allen, Allen, and Allen with his father and two brothers; he helped shape the business into one of Richmond’s most well-known personal injury firms; and

WHEREAS, gaining notoriety as a trial lawyer in the 1950s, Ashby Allen won one of the earliest products liability cases against an automobile manufacturer in the United States, and he was well served by his personal expertise in mechanics, electricity, hydraulics, and safety engineering throughout his career; and

WHEREAS, highly admired in the legal field, Ashby Allen was a founding member of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, a governor of the American Association for Justice, and a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association and International Academy of Trial Lawyers; and

WHEREAS, a proud University of Virginia alumnus, Ashby Allen made many generous donations to his alma mater and was a lifelong supporter of the university’s athletics programs; he was also a member of the Country Club of Virginia, Princess Anne Country Club, and Mediterranean Society of America, as well as an avid world traveler; and

WHEREAS, Ashby Allen will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 30 years, Sara; children, Ashby, Jr., Charles, Rebecca, and Mary, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Ashby B. Allen, a respected attorney and active member of the Richmond community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ashby B. Allen as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
