16103980DWHEREAS, Maggie Lee Dixon Ingram, who expressed her deep and abiding faith through the joy of song and built a rich legacy of service to the Richmond community, died on June 23, 2015; and
WHEREAS, a native of Coffee County, Georgia, Maggie Ingram began singing at a young age when she joined a Baptist choir near her family’s home; she also taught herself to play piano and began to cultivate the deep connection with Jesus Christ that would guide her throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, in the 1940s, Maggie Ingram moved to Miami, where she began raising her family and shared her passion for music with the community as a soloist for a gospel quartet called the Six Trumpets; she taught her children to sing harmony in her spare time, laying the foundation for her own group, Maggie Ingram and the Ingramettes; and
WHEREAS, Maggie Ingram and her children relocated to Richmond in 1961; she worked as a housekeeper, then accepted a position with the Department of Social Services, which she held until she started her own day care business; and
WHEREAS, Maggie Ingram and the Ingramettes made their musical debut at Hood Temple African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church shortly after arriving in Richmond; they went on to perform at other venues and events in Richmond and all along the East Coast, earning many awards and accolades; and
WHEREAS, living her faith through her actions, Maggie Ingram worked to enhance the quality of life of all her fellow Richmond residents; she delivered meals to community members in need, established a prison ministry, supported family day programs at Virginia prisons, and opened her home to female prisoners transitioning back into society; and
WHEREAS, Maggie Ingram will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her children, Almeta, John, Lucious, Thomas, and Christine, and their families and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Maggie Lee Dixon Ingram, a well-known singer who inspired others through her faith; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Maggie Lee Dixon Ingram as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
