2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, Joseph D. Exline of Beaverdam, a passionate educator; respected advocate for increased science education in the Commonwealth; and a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died on January 10, 2016; and
WHEREAS, a native of Lewis County, West Virginia, Joseph Exline graduated at the top of his class from Glenville State College; he later earned a master’s degree from Ohio State University and a doctorate from the University of Maryland, College Park; and
WHEREAS, Joseph Exline began his career in education as an earth science and biology teacher at Herndon High School, then joined the Virginia Department of Education, where he was appointed as director of science and helped develop the Statewide Systemic Initiative; and
WHEREAS, as principal investigator and project director for V-Quest, a project of the Virginia Quality Education in Sciences and Technology initiative funded by the National Science Foundation, Joseph Exline worked to enhance math and science curricula at elementary and secondary schools throughout the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, in 1987, Joseph Exline joined the private sector and formed Exline Consulting Services; he remained active in civic affairs, serving as president of the Beaverdam Heritage Day Foundation and a supporter of the Pop’s Country Store museum; and
WHEREAS, Joseph Exline will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 57 years, Janet; children, Joseph, Diana, and Christopher, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Joseph D. Exline, a dedicated educator and respected member of the Beaverdam community; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joseph D. Exline as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
