2016 SESSION
16103738DWHEREAS, the Mills E. Godwin High School boys’ soccer team secured its first state title in more than a decade, winning the Virginia High School League Group 5A state championship in June 2015; and
WHEREAS, the Mills E. Godwin High School Eagles defeated the Broad Run High School Spartans by a score of 2 - 0 in the state final at Robinson Secondary School; and
WHEREAS, in the first half of the state championship game, the Mills E. Godwin High School Eagles weathered a vigorous attack by the Spartans to keep the game level at 0 - 0; and
WHEREAS, the Mills E. Godwin High School Eagles took the lead in the 71st minute when Will Martin scored a header off of an arcing throw-in from Tommy Kinnick; Tommy Kinnick followed up with a goal of his own one minute later off of a through ball from Will Selden; and
WHEREAS, the victorious season is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of the coaches and staff, and the energetic support of the entire Mills E. Godwin High School community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Mills E. Godwin High School boys’ soccer team on winning the Virginia High School League Group 5A state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Skip Stevens, head coach of the Mills E. Godwin boys’ soccer team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the team’s success and best wishes for the future.
