Celebrating the life of Brenda Cunningham Mauney.

WHEREAS, Brenda Cunningham Mauney of Hampton, a teacher, an active community volunteer, a wife, mother, and devoted caregiver who was an inspiring role model to all who knew her, died on July 9, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Brenda Mauney was born in Hampton on May 1, 1951, and was the eighth of nine children; she had a congenital hearing loss, yet at a time when life was often a challenge for those with disabilities, Brenda Mauney refused to be defined in that manner and chose instead to look forward with confidence and the spirit of a warrior; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from Hampton High School in 1969, Brenda Mauney earned a bachelor’s degree from Tuskegee University and was a member of the university’s Honor Society and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, in 1973, Brenda Mauney returned to Hampton and started teaching in the Hampton City Schools, beginning a 27-year career in education; she derived great satisfaction from inspiring young people to love learning; and

WHEREAS, Brenda Mauney had a zest for life and made many contributions to the community; she was involved with voter registration efforts and belonged to the Dochiki Wives, an auxiliary of The Dochiki Social and Civic Club of Newport News; and

WHEREAS, the Tidewater Tuskegee Alumni Club was a longtime beneficiary of Brenda Mauney’s civic efforts; she worked tirelessly for the club and spent many hours each year helping with the group’s Scholarship Breakfast; and

WHEREAS, Brenda Mauney was a woman of great faith and a devoted wife, mother, and daughter; she raised her family while working full time and through the years welcomed other people into her home who were in need; and

WHEREAS, Brenda Mauney will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her husband, Melville; children, Adrienne and Melville III, and their families; and many family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Brenda Cunningham Mauney of Hampton, a teacher, volunteer in many community organizations, devoted wife and mother, and a positive and inspiring role model; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Brenda Cunningham Mauney as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
