HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 22 Celebrating the life of John Waller Maloney.

WHEREAS, John Waller Maloney, a former journalist and financial advisor in Richmond who dedicated much of his life to serving and supporting children with autism and their families, died on April 26, 2015; and

WHEREAS, John Maloney attended St. Christopher’s School and graduated from Collegiate School; he earned a bachelor’s degree from Hampden-Sydney College and a master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University; and

WHEREAS, after completing his education, John Maloney worked to inform members of the public as a journalist, writing for Style Weekly, the Winchester Star, the Richmond News Leader, and the Richmond Times-Dispatch; he later switched careers to become a vice president of Wells Fargo Advisors; and

WHEREAS, as the father of a child with autism, John Maloney worked to educate members of the community at a time when the spectrum disorder was little understood; he was a tireless advocate for families with autistic children, leading efforts to extend eligibility for benefits to age 10; and

WHEREAS, John Maloney also worked with Collegiate School to establish the Open Gym, a supervised recreational program for autistic children, and with Autism Speaks in Virginia to provide insurance coverage for children and job opportunities for young adults; and

WHEREAS, John Maloney was an active member of the Country Club of Virginia and the board of the Faison School; he enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church; and

WHEREAS, John Maloney will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his children, John, Jr., and Mary, and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of John Waller Maloney, a passionate advocate for autistic children and their families in the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John Waller Maloney as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
