WHEREAS, in 2016, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries celebrates 100 years of conserving and managing the Commonwealth’s wildlife and natural resources, an important shared responsibility of current and future generations of Virginians; and

WHEREAS, more than 100 years ago, a group of dedicated sportsmen and conservationists proposed establishing a state wildlife agency to help restore beleaguered fish and wildlife populations in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries was created by the Virginia General Assembly on June 17, 1916, and the department’s first office was established in the cloak room of the Senate Chamber in the Capitol; and

WHEREAS, funding for the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is provided directly by Virginia’s hunters, trappers, anglers, boaters, and wildlife enthusiasts and is used to coordinate the management of inland fisheries, wildlife, and recreational boating; and

WHEREAS, the wildlife management efforts and conservation programs of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, supported and funded by sportsmen and wildlife enthusiasts, have benefited all citizens of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries for its 100 years of service to the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the executive director of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for the department’s effective stewardship of the Commonwealth’s wildlife resources for the benefit of all Virginians.
