2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, Ruth Ann Harvey, a government employee during World War II and a trusted business owner in Alexandria who was a beloved friend to many in the community, died on January 8, 2016; and
WHEREAS, a native of Custar, Ohio, Ruth Ann Harvey graduated from Tiffin University, then relocated to Washington, D.C., to work for the Department of War; in 1943, she was one of the first people to move into the newly constructed Pentagon, where she served her country throughout World War II; and
WHEREAS, after the birth of their first child, Ruth Ann Harvey and her husband moved to Alexandria and operated Hollin Hall Automotive Service Station; she continued to operate the business after her husband’s death in 1966; and
WHEREAS, at a time when self-service gas stations were becoming standard, Ruth Ann Harvey noticed that senior members of the community were having difficulty pumping gas and often required assistance; and
WHEREAS, a visionary businesswoman, Ruth Ann Harvey converted Hollin Hall Automotive to an all full-service gas station, where three full-time attendants pump gas, clean windshields, and check a car’s oil level, all while customers remain in their cars; and
WHEREAS, the employees of Hollin Hall Automotive value good customer service above all else, and seniors from around the area visit the station to ensure that their cars are properly maintained; many local youth have gotten their first job at the gas station and gained valuable life experience from Ruth Ann Harvey; and
WHEREAS, predeceased by her husband, Leon, and two sons, Cleveland and Leon, Jr., Ruth Ann Harvey will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her children, Tom, Mike, Steve, Bob, and Jim, and their families, and numerous other family members, friends, and former customers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Ruth Ann Harvey, a respected former government employee and business owner in Alexandria; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ruth Ann Harvey as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
