HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 200
Commending the Nansemond River High School girls' indoor track team.

WHEREAS, the Nansemond River High School girls’ indoor track team completed its second consecutive victorious season by winning the 2015 Virginia High School League Group 4A state track and field championship; and

WHEREAS, the talented competitors from Nansemond River High School in Suffolk set state records in five events at the championship meet, which was held in March; and

WHEREAS, Nansemond High School senior Kara Lyles won the 500-meter dash with a record-setting time of 1:15.46, breaking her own record set in 2014; she also had a record-breaking distance in the long jump of 19-11.25 feet, breaking the old record by more than a foot; and

WHEREAS, Kara Lyles’ long jump was the second-best effort in the country for 2015, and it also put her in seventh place in the state since records were kept; the senior from Nansemond River High School scored 33 points for the school—the highest individual score at the meet; and

WHEREAS, another state record that was set by an athlete from Nansemond River High School athlete was the shot put arc; senior Zakiya Rashid broke her own 2014 record-setting distance with a throw of 44-11.50 feet, more than a foot longer than her previous winning mark; and

WHEREAS, additionally, runners from Nansemond River High School broke state records in two relay events; junior Brandeé Johnson, senior Candice James, junior Dajaé Goulet, and sophomore Karah Foster won the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:44.07; and

WHEREAS, the Nansemond River High School Warriors’ relay team of sophomore Syaira Richardson, junior Amirah Jones, senior Courtney James, and Kara Lyles won the 4x400-meter relay with a state record-setting time of 4:00.61; and

WHEREAS, Brandeé Johnson was the state victor in the 300-meter dash with a time of 39.27 seconds, and she also came in first in the 55-meter hurdles race with a time of 8.14 seconds, garnering a total of 31 team points for the Nansemond River High School Warriors; and

WHEREAS, the outstanding athleticism and teamwork shown by the members of the Nansemond River High School girls’ indoor track team are a reflection of their talent and hard work and the support they have received from their coaches, families, friends, and the entire school community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Nansemond River High School girls’ indoor track team for winning the 2015 Virginia High School League Group 4A state track and field championship and for setting five state records; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Byron Justin, head coach of the Nansemond River High School girls’ indoor track team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the team’s record-setting season and championship performance.
