WHEREAS, Richard V. Hurley, who built strong connections between the University of Mary Washington and the Fredericksburg community as the university’s ninth president, retires in 2016 after a distinguished career in education; and
WHEREAS, a native of New Jersey, Richard “Rick” V. Hurley earned degrees from what is now Stockton University and Central Michigan University; he worked as vice president of administration and finance at Longwood University for 15 years, then joined the University of Mary Washington; and
WHEREAS, Rick Hurley served as chief financial officer, executive vice president, and acting president of the University of Mary Washington, before becoming president of the university in 2010; he earned the respect of his peers for his transparency, collaborative leadership style, and responsiveness to the needs of students, faculty, and staff; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure as president, Rick Hurley successfully raised $50 million through the Mary Washington First campaign; he oversaw the construction of the William W. Anderson Center, the Information and Technology Convergence Center, and the University Center, as well as the opening of the University of Mary Washington’s third campus in Dahlgren; and
WHEREAS, under Rick Hurley’s visionary leadership, the University of Mary Washington completed Eagle Village, a public/private development featuring student apartments, a pedestrian bridge over U.S. Route 1, retail and office space, a parking facility, and a hotel; and
WHEREAS, Rick Hurley built strong relationships with the University of Mary Washington students, actively attending student events and even helping new students on move-in day; he hosted dinners and ice cream socials for students at his historic home, Brompton; and
WHEREAS, dedicating himself to enhancing the quality of life of all Fredericksburg residents, Rick Hurley has served as chair of the Rappahannock United Way and director of the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce; he further engaged with the community by forming the University of Mary Washington Center for Economic Development and the Town and Gown Committee; and
WHEREAS, Rick Hurley helped the University of Mary Washington earn national accolades for its high student retention and graduation rates; in 2015, he received the Prince B. Woodard Leadership Award from the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce for his many years of service to the region; and
WHEREAS, after his well-earned retirement, Rick Hurley plans to seek new opportunities to serve the community and spend more time with his wife, children, and grandchildren; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Richard V. Hurley on the occasion of his retirement as president of the University of Mary Washington; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Richard V. Hurley as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his service to the students of the University of Mary Washington and contributions to the field of education.
