2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Honorable Colon H. Whitehurst, a respected member of the Chesapeake community, who presided over the Chesapeake General District Court of the 1st Judicial District of Virginia as chief judge for 18 years, died on December 18, 2015; and
WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of the former Norfolk County and the City of Chesapeake, Colon Whitehurst graduated from Great Bridge High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Wesleyan College and a law degree from The College of William and Mary; and
WHEREAS, Colon Whitehurst served the community as an attorney for 11 years; he was a founding partner of the firm Bray and Whitehurst and became a managing partner of Whitehurst, Grissom, and MacDonald; and
WHEREAS, in 1990, Colon Whitehurst carried on a long family tradition of public service in the region when he was appointed as a judge of the Chesapeake General District Court; he presided with great fairness and wisdom for 21 years, including 18 years as chief judge; and
WHEREAS, Colon Whitehurst also worked to enhance the community through his leadership as chair of the Chesapeake Port Authority, trustee of the Great Bridge Battlefield and Waterways History Foundation, and board member of the Bank of Hampton Roads and Virginia Wesleyan College; and
WHEREAS, Colon Whitehurst lived his faith through his actions and enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as an active member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Wesleyan Sunday school class for 36 years; and
WHEREAS, a true gentleman who never forgot his country roots, Colon Whitehurst served the City of Chesapeake and the Commonwealth with the utmost integrity and professionalism; and
WHEREAS, Colon Whitehurst will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 43 years, Patricia; daughter, Ashley, and her family; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of the Honorable Colon H. Whitehurst, a chief judge of the 1st Judicial District of Virginia and a respected member of the Chesapeake community; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Honorable Colon H. Whitehurst as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
