2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, Dan Lyons, an admired teacher, coach, and school administrator who oversaw work to renovate Lylburn Downing Middle School and the construction of Waddell Elementary School, retired as superintendent of Lexington Public Schools in 2015 after 38 years in education; and
WHEREAS, reared in Takoma Park, Maryland, Dan Lyons moved to Florida at a young age, then returned to Maryland, where he graduated from Loyola University Maryland; inspired by his teachers, he pursued a long and fulfilling career in education; and
WHEREAS, Dan Lyons taught ninth-grade and tenth-grade students in Baltimore Public Schools and coached basketball at a Catholic school in Alabama before relocating to Lexington in 1985; he taught biology at Lexington High School and coached basketball at the high school and at Washington and Lee University; and
WHEREAS, after the consolidation of county and city high schools in 1992, Dan Lyons served as assistant principal of Rockbridge County High School and principal of Lylburn Downing Middle School, then was named superintendent of Lexington Public Schools in 2002; and
WHEREAS, Dan Lyons spearheaded efforts to preserve, renovate, and expand the historic Lylburn Downing Middle School, which were completed in 2010, and initiated the construction of the new Waddell Elementary School, which is scheduled for completion in 2016; and
WHEREAS, during his 13-year tenure as superintendent, Dan Lyons helped his schools earn recognition for academic achievement, and he proudly established the Beta Club, a national community service club, at Lylburn Downing Middle School; and
WHEREAS, after his well-earned retirement, Dan Lyons plans to help coach the Lylburn Downing Middle School boys’ basketball team, as well as spend more time with his wife, Karen, and daughters, Christine and Kate; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Dan Lyons on the occasion of his retirement as superintendent of Lexington Public Schools; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dan Lyons as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his tireless efforts to serve and support the youth of the Lexington community.
