2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy football team capped off an impressive season by winning the 2015 Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division III championship; and
WHEREAS, the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Saints defeated a talented and previously unbeaten team from Atlantic Shores Christian School 38 - 18 on November 20, 2015, to claim their fourth state title; and
WHEREAS, in an exciting championship game held at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex, the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy team scored first with a 28-yard touchdown run, followed by a two-point conversion; and
WHEREAS, the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Saints are best known for their successful running game; however, the team’s second and third touchdowns came on passes of 35 yards and 28 yards respectively, each of which was accompanied by a successful two-point conversion; and
WHEREAS, the determination and hard work of the football players from Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in Suffolk was crucial to the 2015 victory; the offensive line stayed focused throughout the game, and impressive rushing plays also helped ensure the momentous win; and
WHEREAS, since 1991, the Saints have won the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) Division III football championship under four different coaches, but the 2015 championship was the first state title for head coach Lew Johnston, who praised his talented and versatile team; and
WHEREAS, by winning the 2015 VISAA crown, Lew Johnston ended a rewarding coaching career on a stellar note; he retired at the end of the 2015 season, having been a football coach for 41 years; and
WHEREAS, the enthusiastic support that the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy football team received from their families, friends, coaches, teammates, and the entire school community all contributed to the squad’s successful season; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy football team for winning the 2015 Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division III championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy football team as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the team’s outstanding accomplishments and championship season.
