2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Turner Ashby High School girls’ basketball team engineered a remarkable comeback to win—in overtime—the 2015 Virginia High School League Group 3A state championship; and
WHEREAS, the talented and hard-working members of the Turner Ashby team from Bridgewater defeated nearby rival, Broadway High School, 64 - 60; it was the fifth time the two teams had played since the season began; and
WHEREAS, the game that determined the 2015 state champion was a fierce contest between two excellent and talented teams; the competition was held on March 11, 2015, at the Siegel Center in Richmond; and
WHEREAS, at one point during the game, the Turner Ashby High School Knights trailed by 12 points in the second quarter; later, with less than two minutes to play in regulation, the team from Rockingham County was behind 49 - 44; and
WHEREAS, the Turner Ashby High School team refused to admit defeat, and the intensity they had displayed throughout their season came to the forefront as time wound down; with a three-point basket and a pair of free throws, the Knights tied the game; and
WHEREAS, during overtime, the Turner Ashby High School team, which ended the season with a 27 - 3 record, took the lead for good after a steal and subsequent layup gave the squad a five-point advantage; the Knights never trailed for the rest of the game; and
WHEREAS, the 2015 crown is the third state championship for the Turner Ashby High School girls’ basketball program; the school also won titles in 1998 and 1999, all under the guidance of head coach Rob Lovell; and
WHEREAS, the members of the Turner Ashby High School girls’ basketball team were strongly supported by the coaching staff, fellow teammates, families, friends, basketball fans, and the entire school community during their run to the championship; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Turner Ashby High School girls’ basketball team for winning the 2015 Virginia High School League Group 3A state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to head coach Rob Lovell as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the outstanding accomplishments and championship season of the 2015 Turner Ashby High School girls’ basketball team.
