2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, Clyde F. Jackson, an outstanding 4-H agent who mentored young people in Fairfax and Prince William Counties for more than 29 years, died in October 2009, and was posthumously inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame on October 19, 2015; and
WHEREAS, Clyde Jackson became involved with the national youth development organization as a child when he joined a 4-H club in Amelia County; he frequently spoke of how his life was shaped by his 4-H experiences; and
WHEREAS, in 1967, Clyde Jackson became the first president of the Black Virginia 4-H Youth Program and was one of seven African American youth leaders to attend the first integrated State 4-H Congress; he later attended the National 4-H Congress; and
WHEREAS, involvement with the 4-H program became the focal point of Clyde Jackson’s life; he spent almost three decades as a 4-H extension agent in Fairfax and Prince William Counties, was president of the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents, and was a member of the board of The Joint Council of Extension Professionals; and
WHEREAS, regarded as an outstanding role model for youth and adults, Clyde Jackson was a positive influence in the lives of many people; with a gentle leadership style and an ever-present smile, he sought common ground, listened carefully, and valued the contributions made by those around him; and
WHEREAS, Clyde Jackson had a natural ability to put people at ease and readily formed partnerships; he also stressed to those with whom he worked the importance of remaining flexible and watching for opportunities to help people grow and develop; and
WHEREAS, after retiring in 2008, Clyde Jackson helped establish 4-H clubs at military facilities, offering programs and resources to help boys and girls—who often had parents who were deployed—adjust and cope; and
WHEREAS, Clyde Jackson, who was a director of the Virginia 4-H Foundation Board, received several awards; in addition to his posthumous induction into the National 4-H Hall of Fame in 2015, he was honored with the Meritorious Service Award from the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents for his leadership and work with at-risk youth; and
WHEREAS, Clyde Jackson, who has been greatly missed and fondly remembered by his wife, Sandra, also is remembered as a champion for young men and women from all walks of life and for being an inspiration to hundreds of people; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Clyde F. Jackson, an esteemed and long-serving member of the 4-H national youth development program in the Commonwealth and the nation; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Clyde F. Jackson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
