16103507DBe it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding in Article 1 of Chapter 5 of Title 32.1 a section numbered 32.1-137.05 as follows:
§ 32.1-137.05. Advance disclosure of allowed amount or charge for elective admission, procedure, test, or service.
Prior to admitting a patient whose health plan includes a deductible, copayment, or coinsurance requirement for health care service of $500 or more for any elective procedure or performing an elective procedure or test on or delivering an elective service to such patient, and upon request of such patient or his legally authorized representative, every hospital shall, within two business days, disclose to the patient or his legally authorized representative the amount of the charge for the procedure for which the patient will be responsible after payment of the allowed benefits by the patient's health insurance provider.
