16102173DBe it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 54.1-2971.02 as follows:
§ 54.1-2971.02. Prescription of opioids.
Prior to initiating a course of treatment of a human patient that includes the prescription of opioids or benzodiazepines for a period that is expected to last more than 90 consecutive days, a physician shall establish the medical and treatment history of the patient, which shall include performing a physical examination of the patient and may include urine drug screening.
