WHEREAS, the University of Virginia wrestling team won the National Collegiate Athletic Association Atlantic Coast Conference championship in March 2015; and
WHEREAS, in a thrilling upset, the fourth-seeded University of Virginia Cavaliers defeated the second-place University of Pittsburgh Panthers by an impressive margin with a final score of 85.5 to 71; and
WHEREAS, all 10 wrestlers from the University of Virginia contributed to the victory, which was the fifth Atlantic Coast Conference title in program history; each member of the team finished in fourth place or higher; and
WHEREAS, George DiCamillo took first place in the 133-pound weight class, and Nick Sulzer repeated as the conference champion in the 165-pound weight class; four other wrestlers—Nick Herrmann, Andrew Atkinson, Blaise Butler, and Zach Nye—advanced to the final matches in their weight classes; and
WHEREAS, Joe Spisak finished third in his weight class and T.J. Miller, Tyler Askey, and Patrick Gillen all finished fourth in their weight classes; seven of the University of Virginia Cavaliers earned berths at the National College Athletic Association national championships, capping off the outstanding team effort; and
WHEREAS, the victory is a testament to the determination and hard work of the athletes, the able leadership of the coaches and staff, and the passionate support of the entire University of Virginia Wahoo community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the University of Virginia wrestling team hereby be commended on winning the 2015 National Collegiate Athletic Association Atlantic Coast Conference championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Steve Garland, head coach of the University of Virginia wrestling team, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the team’s accomplishments.
