SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 98
Celebrating the life of Elaine Trimble Patterson.
 
Agreed to by the Senate, February 19, 2015
 

WHEREAS, Elaine Trimble Patterson, a loving wife and mother and devoted friend to many people, an avid bridge player and active volunteer, a patron of the arts who enjoyed travel and reading, a member of many community and cultural organizations, and a person of great faith, died on November 29, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Elaine Trimble was selected the “Capital’s Prettiest Baby” not long after her birth in Washington, D.C., and her photograph appeared in newspapers across the country; she was the daughter of a government attorney and the granddaughter of two United States congressmen; and

WHEREAS, Elaine Trimble graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and Georgetown Visitation Junior College and was a member of the class of 1945 at Trinity College; during World War II, she christened a liberty ship; and

WHEREAS, soon after her marriage to Lieutenant Colonel Lowell H. Patterson, Jr., the couple was stationed in France, where Elaine Patterson gave birth to three of the couple’s four sons; the final Army assignment before her husband retired in 1966 was at Fort Monroe; and

WHEREAS, the family settled in Hampton and became active in many areas of the community; after her husband’s death in 1979, Elaine Patterson continued to stay busy with volunteer work, bridge games, attending cultural events, travel, reading, and many other activities; and

WHEREAS, Elaine Patterson enjoyed taking part in the activities of the Fort Monroe Officers’ Wives Club, the Riverdale Garden Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Jamestowne Society, the Chevy Chase Club, and other civic groups; and

WHEREAS, a woman of great faith, Elaine Patterson was a devout member of the Roman Catholic Church and attended Mass regularly; she was a member of the John Carroll Society, and in 1991, she was invested as a Dame in the Sovereign Military Order of Malta; and

WHEREAS, Elaine Patterson will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her sons, Lowell, South, Edward, and James, and their families; and by many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Elaine Trimble Patterson, a loving wife and mother and devoted friend, an avid bridge player and active volunteer, a patron of the arts who enjoyed travel and reading, a member of many community and cultural organizations, and a person of great faith; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Elaine Trimble Patterson as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect for her memory.
