Celebrating the life of Curtis Howard Hazel.

WHEREAS, Curtis Howard Hazel, who lived in Newport News for 42 years, a man of many talents and wide-ranging interests who was involved in many areas of his community, an entrepreneur, a man of great faith, and a devoted husband and father, died on January 22, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Curtis Hazel, who was known as Curt, graduated from Old Dominion University and was a member of the alumni association; he was active in several fraternal and civic organizations, including Omega Psi Phi fraternity and the Freemasons; and

WHEREAS, a member of the Newport News Democratic Committee for more than 20 years, Curt Hazel provided leadership as a member of the executive board; for more than 35 years, he devoted much time and energy campaigning for local, state, and national Democratic candidates, and he worked as an election official; and

WHEREAS, Curt Hazel served on the board of directors of the Virginia Choral Society; he was active in the music group’s “Reach for the High Note” program that offers fine choral music and education throughout the Newport News community; and

WHEREAS, as an entrepreneur, Curt Hazel pursued many career interests; after serving in the United States Air Force, he was host of a news and talk show on AM radio station WTJZ for several years, and he was a partner in an insurance consulting firm with a longtime friend; and

WHEREAS, at the time of his retirement, Curt Hazel was a partner in G&H Consultants, a company that specializes in building affordable housing in Hampton Roads; he loved life and stayed active, enjoying golf, reading, and spending time with family and friends; and

WHEREAS, a man of great faith, Curt Hazel was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Newport News for 43 years; he served on the vestry and was a lay minister; he also attended to sick and shut-in church members by delivering the Holy Eucharist; and

WHEREAS, Curt Hazel will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by Marvis, his wife of 51 years; his children, Anita and Lydia, and their families; and by many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Curtis Howard Hazel of Newport News, a man of many talents and wide-ranging interests who was involved in many areas of his community, an entrepreneur, a man of great faith, and a devoted husband and father; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Curtis Howard Hazel as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect for his memory.
