Commending Freddie W. Nicholas, Sr.

WHEREAS, Freddie W. Nicholas, Sr., a visionary educator and school administrator, served the Commonwealth with distinction as the first African American college president in the Virginia Community College System; and

WHEREAS, a diligent student himself, Freddie Nicholas earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Virginia State University and a doctorate from the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Freddie Nicholas helped prepare students for careers, higher education, and responsible citizenship as a teacher, department chair, and assistant principal at George Washington Carver Regional High School; and

WHEREAS, a champion for the importance of a good education, Freddie Nicholas also held positions at Virginia State University, Northern Virginia Community College, and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College; and

WHEREAS, as the president of John Tyler Community College from 1979 to 1990, Freddie Nicholas was admired as a dedicated leader who oversaw great periods of growth and expansion, and he revitalized the John Tyler Community College Foundation; and

WHEREAS, Freddie Nicholas earned many awards and accolades for his good work over the years, and the Nicholas Student Center at John Tyler Community College is named in his honor; and

WHEREAS, Freddie Nicholas broke down barriers and boldly paved the way for other African American leaders in education; he built a legacy of excellence for both his successors as president of John Tyler Community College and college presidents, deans, and principals throughout the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Freddie W. Nicholas, Sr., hereby be commended for his exceptional service to the Chester community and the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Freddie W. Nicholas, Sr., as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for his leadership of and dedication to the students of John Tyler Community College.
